Kane scores two goals as England clinches Euro 2024 spot with 3-1 win over scandal-hit Italy LONDON (AP) — England booked its place at next summer’s European Championship with a 3-1 win over defending champion Italy at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday.England had to come from behind following Gianluca Scamacca’s first goal for the Azzurri. But two goals from Harry Kane — including a penalty — and a Marcus Rashford strike gave Gareth Southgate’s team the victory it needed to secure at least a top-two finish in its group.“It’s never as easy as it looks,” Kane told Channel 4. “We have had a really tough group this time but credit to the lads, some of the results we’ve had, performances and we topped it off here today. We went 1-0 down, we stayed calm and we stayed steady, we knew we had enough to get the win and we did it.“It has been a tough journey and to qualify with two games to go is credit to everyone involved,” the Bayern Munich striker added.Italy, which is embroiled in another soccer scandal, could face the prospect of playoffs and even failure to qu...

Maryland highway agency cited for ‘serious violation’ connected to crash that killed 6 highway workers Traffic control signs were not posted near the work zone where six highway workers were killed along Interstate 695 in Baltimore County, Maryland, in March.Maryland’s Occupational Safety and Health Office cited the State Highway Administration with a “serious violation,” which according to the report is a violation “where there is a substantial probability that that death or serious physical harm could result.”The report, issued Sept. 21, also stated that the failure to place signs near the work zone near Woodlawn left the work crew there exposed to “struck-by hazards.”There are no penalties associated with the citation.George Simmers, a former Maryland State Highway engineer who retired from the agency in 2011, said he was stunned by the finding.“To have no signing? I mean, that is ridiculous,” he said. “It really is.”Simmers was also critical of the configuration of the work zone along the section of I-695 near Wood...

Aaron Rodgers providing Jets with some inspiration as he continues to recover ahead of schedule It was all like something out of some sort of feel-good sports movie.Aaron Rodgers ditched the crutches and walking boot, strolled onto the field during pregame warmups Sunday and the New York Jets quarterback started throwing passes again. Less than five weeks after tearing his left Achilles tendon. His teammates and coaches got a kick out of it, the fans watching videos on social media couldn’t believe what they were seeing and even reporters watching up in the press box were dumbfounded.“It is unbelievable,” said Zach Wilson, who has started the Jets’ past five games in Rodgers’ absence. “That dude’s demeanor, the way he attacks everything is special, so I’m not surprised at all.”The 39-year-old Rodgers said during his weekly appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday he was “obviously, ahead of schedule” and “felt great” while throwing and had “just a little bit of a limp.” He added that it was “a special moment” for him to toss around the ...

Pac-12 booming in attendance, ratings in last season before teams scatter to different conferences BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — For a conference with teams about to scatter in all directions, the Pac-12 sure looks rosy at the moment.Overall attendance is up around the league through the halfway mark ( thanks, Deion Sanders ). Ratings, too, are booming (tip of the cap to Sanders again). The league also has six teams in the Top 25, including No. 5 Washington in a great position to earn a place in the College Football Playoff. The Pac-12 even has a chance at a second straight Heisman Trophy winner (Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. is among the favorites ).Of course, there’s Sanders again, the Colorado coach who wins these days even when his team doesn’t. Less than a day after the Buffaloes’ colossal collapse against Stanford, “ Saturday Night Live ” did a parody of Sanders with the actor in the skit decked out in Colorado gear and sunglasses. Now that’s prime marketing for the school. The conference remains on quite a roll even as it’s about to wave goodbye to most of...
