Joey Carney’s golden goal gives Oliver Ames back-to-back titles LYNN — After dominating the bulk of play in Saturday’s Div. 2 boys’ soccer final against Wakefield, Oliver Ames suddenly found itself at the mercy of the overtime gods.Fortunately for the Tigers, they had Joey Carney on their side. The senior made his last play in an OA uniform one to remember as he scored 3:30 into the first overtime to give the Tigers a 1-0 win and a second straight title.“Once Joey got to the right side against his defender, I felt like it was over,” Tigers coach John Barata said. “I really felt like we deserved to win the game and I don’t often say that. But you hate going into overtime because you’re at the mercy of a bounce or something like that.”Barata had a reason to feel that way because, for as much as his team dominated the game, they couldn’t find a way to solve the puzzle that was Wakefield (17-4-2) keeper Andrew Valley.Valley, who was brilliant in a 10-round shootout to get Wakefield to the final, practically stood on his head during regulation.
